Union or Uilleann pipes The Union or Uilleann Pipes
The Union or Uilleann pipes are the king of bagpipes (key D and C), with a two octave sweet sound and are usually played indoors.

These pipes blend well with other instruments and are well known from many film soundtracks, including The Shipping News, The Irish R.M., Gangs of New York and many others.

Roberts' style of playing is influenced by Seamus Ennis and Willie Clancy. He has also studied the Union pipes with Liam Og O' Flynn.

The pipes pictured were made by Robert, based on a late 19th century set.

Lowland Pipes
The Lowland pipes sound similar to the Great Highland Bagpipes, but they are quieter and are lower in pitch (Key of A). Also, they have more range, being semi-chromatic, and they sound well indoors.
Northumbrian Smallpipes
The Northumbrian Smallpipes have a sweet tone somewhat like a clarinet and blend well with other instruments. Robert has sets in the keys of G, F & D. Robert was featured playing in Beatrix Potters' The Tales of Peter Rabbit.

Great Highland Bagpipe The Great Highland Bagpipe
Almost everybody is familiar with the Great Highland Bagpipe, which is very loud and is usually played outside.

In addition to the standard Bb pipes, Robert has a copy of the famous Black Set of Kintail pitched in A (circa1785) and also Scottish Smallpipes.

The dress shown is Pipe Major circa 1815.

Robert played the part of the Pipe Major in Sharpes' Sword.
